The Power of the pivot

The Power of the Pivot

When a friend recently asked, “How’s the pivot to wellness going?” the question stopped me. Pivot is such a simple word, yet it carries real weight. It speaks of change, adaptability, and intentional movement toward something more aligned. For me, that pivot has been both professional and personal.

As a nurse, pivoting has always been part of the job. Every shift requires it. You move from one patient to another, reassess priorities, and adapt constantly. The ability to pivot quickly and purposefully can make all the difference in an acute care situation. It is about responding to need, staying grounded, and aiming for the best outcome.

Over time, I began to sense a different kind of pivot, one that was not about managing crisis but helping people prevent it. Working in healthcare, you see the toll that stress, disconnection, and lifestyle have on body and mind. I realised that much of what brings people into the system could be softened if we focused on wellness and empowered people to make values-driven choices long before reaching breaking point.

That is when my pivot began. I did not step away from nursing; I shifted the lens through which I saw my work. Moving into health coaching allowed me to bring together clinical reasoning and compassion with a proactive, strengths-based approach. It is still about assessment, support, and care, but now it is centred on helping people connect with their values and use them as a compass for change.

In coaching, I often draw on the Choice Point tool from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It illustrates the moment we face every day, a choice between moving away from discomfort or pivoting toward actions that reflect who we truly want to be. When people identify what really matters to them whether family, health, growth, or calm they begin to make decisions that align with those values, not just with habits or pressure. This shift can be life changing.

The pivot to wellness has reminded me that change does not mean letting go of who you are. It can mean expanding the way you express it. Nursing gave me the foundation, and coaching has added focus on growth, purpose, and prevention. Together, they form a complete picture of care that honours both mind and body.
