Nutrition and fuelling your body

What did you eat today, and how did it make you feel?

Nutrition and Fueling Your Body

Today, the coco puffs were calling, the choice was real. Living in a house with three children, I made the error of having the naughty food available. We eat mostly well whole foods with the occasional slip. That is ok. Treats are normal, I did manage a great recovery, I made a simple breakfast of oats, fresh berries, and seeds., the result I felt energised, focused, (and righteous) also ready to face the day. Nutrition is more than calories or dieting. It is self-care that supports energy, mental clarity, and overall wellbeing.

Taking a strengths-based approach to nutrition, what does this mean?

Recognizing what is already done well and building on it. It’s not about perfection. It’s about creating realistic goals aligned with values, whether that’s supporting your mental clarity, improving energy for yourself and your family, or boosting overall health.

Why Nutrition Matters

What we eat directly affects energy levels, mood, cognitive function, and resilience. Research shows that consistent, nutrient-rich meals support brain function, reduce stress, and improve emotional regulation. Nutrition also works hand-in-hand with other wellness foci, like movement, sleep, and mental wellness.

A values-driven approach helps you stay motivated. Ask yourself: Why do I want to prioritise nutrition? What matters most to me? Your “why” keeps small steps consistent and meaningful.

How to Make Nutrition Practical

Micro-habits: Add one vegetable to each meal, swap processed snacks for fruit or nuts, prep a healthy lunch for tomorrow. What could you do?

Habit stacking: Pair a new habit with an existing one, e.g., drink a glass of water before each meal, or eat a piece of fruit after your morning coffee.

Strengths-focused: Identify what already works. Maybe you already enjoy smoothies ; How can you use that to your advantage?

Call to Action

What is one small, realistic change you can make today to fuel your body in a way that aligns with your values?

Me- I choose to make it simple, the kids go for tinned fruit and Weetbix for a fast fix, for me overnight oats are a fave. I often habit stack making it with lunch prep for the next day.

Other thoughts…..

It could be prepping a nourishing lunch, adding a handful of vegetables, or swapping a late-night snack for something more energizing. Think about your strengths, your values, and what is achievable for you. Small, intentional actions add up to lasting energy, mental clarity, and overall wellbeing.
